Former Anatomy and Pathology building

Leiden

From Anatomy and Pathology building to housing development.

The historical character has been preserved
Putman BV, in collaboration with Coen Hagendoornbouw, converted both the old anatomy and pathology buildings of Leiden University into residential buildings. The old anatomy building was commissioned by Stichting Universitaire Woonwijk Boerhaave to provide 168 homes, 92 in the old building and 76 in the new building (high-rise). In the old Pathology building, Coen Hagendoorn has built 125 homes under his own management. The new building is a tower built against the anatomy building. The historical character of the existing buildings has been preserved. The flats provide living space for different resident groups, for example researchers and PhD students. The old part has been restored, but with a very modern remodelling inside, in the same style as the newly built tower.

Whatever the job, we can handle any complexity

In consultation with the Department of Monuments and a specialised restoration architect, a building plan was developed that required the historical character to be preserved without compromising on comfort. The old courtyard gardens have also been restored and will become a central meeting place for residents. New alterations to the building, such as the hospitality area, outdoor space and new entrance doors, are clearly distinctive in material use.

ClimaRad 2.0 radiators were chosen for the renovation and new Anatomy building. In addition, B-Fans have been installed for extraction in the bathroom. The advantage of the Smart Solution within this project is that the units take up little space. A godsend for a complex building like this, with so many different rooms. In addition, it is noteworthy that the throughput in the new building section is incorporated behind the slat partition. This wonderful project shows that ClimaRad can also be used easily and to excellent effect in historical buildings.

A sustainable solution has been chosen for heat generation. Both buildings are connected to district heating. Each home has its own decentralised unit for hot water generation.
